ZusammenfassungOver the last decades, the incidence and prevalence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in young adults (early-onset CRC) have increased over the last decades at an alarming rate. In addition, recent findings show a similar trend in gastric, pancreatic and biliary tract can-cers. The reasons for the rising incidence of early-onset gastrointestinal cancers are poorly understood. Only a few studies have investigated their risk factors, however, pri-marily on the risk of early-onset CRC. Most of the early-onset gastrointestinal cancers have no genetic predisposition, suggesting a potential key role for lifestyle, nutritional, microbial and environmental factors. Incidence rates of early-onset gastrointestinal can-cers were predicted to increase over the next years, emphasizing the urgent need for a comprehensive understanding of its causes and prevention. Therefore, population-based studies need to be conducted to identify patterns associated with early-onset gastrointes-tinal cancers. It becomes more and more necessary to identify lifestyle-related and other patterns of young people that may establish an oncogenic pattern early in their life. The objective of this project is to identify patterns for cancers related to the gastrointesti-nal tract in young compared to old cancer cases. This project will examine the impact of lifestyle (e.g., diet, alcohol, smoking, physical activity), body mass index, comorbidities, medication, sex, familial predisposition and environmental factors on gastrointestinal cancers in young compared to old cancer cases. Therefore, cross-sectional analysis with prevalent data from NAKO baseline will be performed. The results will provide infor-mation on whether and to what extent modifiable lifestyle factors, including diet, alcohol and physical activity, are associated with early-onset gastrointestinal cancer.
