ZusammenfassungWorldwide, type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accounts for over 90% of all diabetes cases. T2DM was predominantly diagnosed at older age, but in recent decades, its incidence has also been rapidly increasing in younger adults in many countries, including Germany. Patients with early-onset T2DM have poorer outcomes (e.g., glycemic control) compared to those diagnosed at later years. Identification of key, modifiable predictors of early-onset T2DM (EOT2DM) would therefore be useful for refining risk-adapted preventive strategies for EOT2DM. Using the German National Cohort baseline survey, this study aims (i) to assess determinants of EOT2DM aside from obesity, the currently by far most important predictor of T2DM, and (ii) to quantify the body mass index (BMI)-equivalent associations of various risk factors with EOT2DM in younger adults. Results from this project will be useful for enhanced risk stratification and screening recommendations for younger adults aside from BMI and family history of diabetes.
