SummaryThe bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-derived phase angle is a marker of tissue mass and the intra- and extracellular fluid distribution, with higher values reflecting improved cell integrity and general health status. Recent studies have underscored the potential of low phase angle values as a marker of a catabolic state in individuals with diabetes, further highlighting its clinical relevance. However, previous studies have produced inconsistent results and were limited by relatively small sample sizes, and insufficient consideration of covariables. Therefore, the relationship between the phase angle and diabetes remains unclear. Hence, we aim to explore the cross-sectional association of the bioelectrical phase angle with diabetes, prediabetes, and continuous glycaemic traits and to examine the potential of the phase angle for future use in clinical practice.
