SummarySkeletal muscle is vital for physical mobility and plays a significant role in maintaining whole-body metabolic homeostasis. The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)-derived phase angle is assumed to reflect tissue mass and the intra- and extracellular fluid distribution and has been proposed as a potential indicator of muscle mass and quality. However, it is still unclear how the bioelectrical phase angle correlates with muscle mass and quality since prior studies with BIA-derived data, imaging data, and grip strength data are insufficient. Therefore, we aim to examine the association and conformity of the bioelectrical phase angle with muscle mass and quality parameters derived from BIA equations, grip strength, and magnetic resonance imaging to explore the potential role of the phase angle as an alternative indicator characterising muscle mass and quality.
