SummaryMale lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) increase with age and have a negative impact on health-related quality of life. Treatment options include medical and surgical interventions. Despite its high prevalence, little is known about the pathogenesis of the disease. Decreases in testosterone levels using 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5ARIs) lead to a reduction of prostate volume and an improvement in symptoms. Also, recent studies have shown that diet and lifestyle changes may also have an impact on LUTS. Due to the paucity of clinical evidence, however, little clinically relevant recommendation can be advised to patients with LUTS. Given the prevalence of the disease, prevention and early intervention would be desirable. In order to shed more light on the multicausal genesis of prostate growth and the development of LUTS, a detailed analysis of nutritional aspects and lifestyle parameters is needed.
The proposed study therefore aims to investigate the influence of different variables such as nutrition, lifestyle and comorbidities on prostate size with the aim of identifying risk factors for prostate growth. In addition, we aim to obtain PSA levels from the patients in the NAKO database and find out about the correlation of PSA levels and prostate growth.
