SummaryPhysical activity is essential to a healthy lifestyle, and walkability plays a significant role in promoting it. A walkable neighborhood is designed to make it easy and convenient for residents to walk to nearby destinations such as shops, restaurants, parks, and other amenities. The application of walkability indices is, therefore, essential to link the attributes of the environment to individual health behavior and physical activity. Furthermore, several published indices enable the comparison of neighborhood-built environments worldwide. In this proposal, we aim to 1) apply an evidence-informed walkability index in Germany, 2) examine its cross-sectional associations with total and purpose-specific walking behaviors of adults and older adults across socioeconomic and urbanization strata, and 3) explore the joint association of walkability and green/ blue spaces for daily physical activity.
