SummaryPrevious studies indicate a bidirectional association between sleep parameters and type 2 diabetes. Short and long sleep duration as well as insomnia are all associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In addition, poor glycemic control in known diabetes can disturb sleep, e.g. due to hypoglycemia at night. However, study results differ if sleep parameters are self-reported or objectively measured. Within the NAKO cohort, a variety of sleep parameters like sleep duration or sleep quality, that are available as both subjective and objective information, can be analyzed. In particular, their association with quality of glycemic control in type 2 diabetes as well as disturbed glucose tolerance in people without known diabetes can be investigated. The aims are to estimate the strength of associations between objective sleep duration and the frequency of type 2 diabetes, the quality of glycemic control in known type 2 diabetes, undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes as well as the association between subjective/objective sleep quality and the frequency of these glucose disorders.
