SummaryThis research project aims at investigating how the social exposome affects premature mortality and overal mortality by examining the accumulation, interaction, and intersection of social exposures across the life course. While prior conceptual work has highlighted the multidimensional nature of the social exposome, empirical evidence remains limited, particularly regarding how social exposures interact across different levels and jointly shape mortality risk. The NAKO cohort study provides a unique and valuable foundation to address these important questions. With data from over 200,000 participants, NAKO offers the statistical power required to investigate complex interactions among social exposures and their associations with premature mortality and overall mortality. In addition, the availability of high-quality socio-environmental data enables the integration of individual-level, social network, regional-level exposures, facilitating the analysis of multilevel effects. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding how combinations of social disadvantages contribute to mortality risk and how the duration and persistence of exposures across the life course influence health outcomes. By leveraging this rich NAKO dataset, the project seeks to advance understanding of the mechanisms through which social environments shape mortality and contribute to health inequalities.
